The installation evokes the references and energies of antiquity through its expressive materiality, compositional elements, and proportions. Eleven delves into the potential of terracotta as a material, addressing broader questions of sustainability alongside contemporary conditions of crafts and technology.
Comprising eleven terracotta columns arranged to form an enclosure, each column is divided into seven segments of extruded terracotta, vertically stacked. Fluted with 18 protrusions or fins, these columns serve to stabilize while adding three-dimensional depth to their bodies. The sinuous movements of the fins emerge from the clay's nature and the extrusion process. Material and production method converge to shape the final form. Moreover, the columns are designed to incorporate reinforcement, paving the way for their eventual use as structural members.
